The July, 2009 issue of Scientific American has some commentary on actions needed to address global warming. In Act Now on Global Warming, by the editors, suggestions are given on making "cap-and-trade" work. Theyt ended with a stern warning: "Global warming is a reality, not an opinion. The U.S. must put the brakes on hard if humanity is to accept the need to slow the emissions of CO2"
In Still Needed: A Climate Plan, Jeffrey D. Sachs addresses the lack of a coherent plan for addressing global warming. There is supposedly an "extended version" of his essay at www.ScientificAmeri can.com/jul2009, though I have only seen the paper version so far.
Michael Shermer's contribution in his "Skeptic" column, I Want to Believe, is probably good to read, although it doesn't actually address global warming directly (it is mentioned, though). GW "skeptics" should consider Shermer's explanation of the failures of creationism, since GW skepticism and creationism use very similar methods. Changing the word "creationists" to "global warming skeptics," and "evolution" to global warming" (I made those changes in blue type below) the following is also valid:
"For global warming skeptics to disprove global warming, for example, they need to unravel all these independent lines of evidence as well as construct a rival theory that can explain them better than the theory of gloabl warming. They have not, instead employing only negative evidence in the form of 'if models fail to account for X, then the whole concept of anthropogenic global warming must be false.'"
Interesting that Shermer was once a climate skeptic, but is no longer.
